Although the Department of Plant Pathology and Microbiology was only recently founded on August 1, 2003, the study of Plant Pathology at National Taiwan University has a long and distinguished history. The Department of Plant Pathology and Entomology was established in 1948 making it one of the first education and research units at the University. It was originally divided into the Division of Plant Pathology and the Division of Entomology but these two divisions became Departments in their own right in 1998. The Department of Plant Pathology has further become the Department of Plant Pathology and Microbiology to provide more thorough training in basic and applied microbiological science and further broaden the careers for students.

In the Department of Plant Pathology and Microbiology, the goals of teaching are to nourish students with a solid academic background in microbiology and plant pathology, to establish higher research personnel for the country, and to train experts specialized in plant pathology and microbiology.

To graduate from the Department of Plant Pathology and Microbiology, students take courses in the fields of microbiology, cell biology and molecular biology and also are trained in various techniques in microbiology and biotechnology. Courses provided by the Department include basic and applied subjects in microbiology (microbiology, methods in microbiology, mycology, bacteriology, virology, nematology, applied microbiology etc.), molecular genetics (molecular biology, prokaryotic molecular biology, molecular virology, genetics etc.) and plant pathology (plant pathology, methods in plant pathology, plant pathogenic microorganisms, ecology of plant pathogen, plant disease diagnosis, plant disease management, noninfectious plant disease etc.).

The learning atmosphere in the Department has been great and the students in the past have demonstrated outstanding academic merit. Consequently, graduates have excelled in various fields and made valuable contributions to society. Following this academic tradition, students graduated from the Department of Plant Pathology and Microbiology will surely contribute their learning and expertise to society.
